Fretheim Family Update April 15:
We have an amazing story for you. Over Easter weekend several of our Nigerian staff members were going to a remote village for an outreach. As they were walking through a forest area they though they saw a small log ahead. When they got to the place they saw it was a boy who was naked, dirty and shivering. They picked him up thinking the was only 3 or 4 by his size. They ask about him in the village and was told that he was 15 and at age 2 he was thrown into the 'bush' to die because has was not talking or walking yet. Somehow this boy has survived all those years by eating leaves and other things he could find on his own. He was brought to Jos and admitted to the hospital for severe dehydration. Our ministry doctor examined him and said that based on him having all his adult teeth, he could really be 15. His legs are so small that he can't even walk.
Amazingly he is bonding to Bulus, our staff member who found him, and is affectionate to several of the missionaries. He is quickly learning things like how to use a cup. How he lived all those years on his own is a mystery? The staff named him Emmanuel, God with us. God was definitely with him. He will live with Bulus and his wife at our CARE center in Lafia.
This is why we are here. To mobilize others to help those who can not help themselves. I think of all the children in our CARE centers and how they are happy and healthy and growing intellectually and spiritually and it makes all the hard times worth it.
Our 'hardship' right now is the extreme heat. It has warmer than usual making it very hard to sleep at night. If the electricity is on and the fans blowing it is better but rarely is there a night with electricity all the time. Pray that we will able to sleep better and that the rains will soon come cooling things down.
Pray also for Sarah who missed school today because she is sick. She has a bad headache and probably has the bad cold Elizabeth had last week. Pray also for Emmanuel to get healthier and be able to learn to live with people.
Peter is preparing for his quick trip to the US. He will leave on Sunday and fly direct to New York where he meets with several people in CT. He'll then fly to California where the award ceremony is head on Saturday and then back to us the following Wednesday.
We love and miss you all,
Miriam for Peter, Hannah, Elizabeth, Hunter and Sarah (1 cat, 1 dog and 5 chickens :))
